5 Reasons North Scottsdale Might Not Be the Right Move for You

Everyone loves to rave about North Scottsdale—the luxury homes, world-class golf courses, and that signature desert lifestyle. As someone who lives here and works in real estate, I totally get the hype. But let’s keep it real—this place isn’t for everyone. So before you pack up and head north, here are five honest reasons why North Scottsdale might not be your forever home.

1. The Summer Heat Is Next-Level Brutal

Let’s address the elephant in the room: summer in North Scottsdale is no joke. We’re talking triple-digit, fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk, scorch-your-leather-seats kind of heat. If you love seasons or can’t handle living in a literal sauna from May through October, this could be a deal breaker.

While it cools slightly the farther north you go—like in Cave Creek or Desert Mountain—most locals have a "summer escape plan": vacations, second homes, RV getaways, you name it. Winters? Perfection. But summer? Survival mode.

2. It’s Constantly Under Construction

Moved here for peace and quiet? Surprise! North Scottsdale is growing fast. With new developments, expanding roads, and infrastructure projects like the Loop 101 expansion, construction is a constant. Yes, those extra freeway lanes will be amazing—eventually. Until then, expect delays, detours, and the occasional moment of questioning your life choices in traffic.

3. The Cost of Living Isn’t Cheap

The luxury lifestyle comes at a cost. The average single-family home hovers around $1.1 million in North Scottsdale. Go farther north past Pinnacle Peak and you’ll see some relief, but you’re still paying for that coveted zip code and mountain views.

And it’s not just real estate. From restaurants to groceries, things cost more here. If Whole Foods and $17 cocktails are your vibe, you’ll feel right at home. If not, you might want to check out the East or West Valley for more budget-friendly options.

4. Zero Walkability

If your ideal day involves walking to your favorite coffee shop or strolling to dinner, this might not be your scene. North Scottsdale is spread out, with lots of desert and big views—which means you'll need a car for everything.

Looking for a middle ground? Try McCormick Ranch, where you’ll find sidewalks, green grass, and a bit more walkability while still enjoying North Scottsdale’s peaceful vibe.

5. It's Quiet... Maybe Too Quiet

North Scottsdale is serene. The sunsets are stunning. The wildlife is part of daily life (yes, coyotes included). But if you’re craving nightlife, crowds, and energy? You might be underwhelmed.

After 9 PM, the streets are silent. Sure, places like DC Ranch’s Market Street offer relaxed wine bars, and High Street has spots like Blue Martini for cocktails and live music—but for a true nightlife scene, head to Old Town or Downtown Phoenix.

So, Should You Move Here?

If these “downsides” sound like a dream to you—peaceful nights, desert landscapes, and no hustle-bustle—you might just find your perfect fit in North Scottsdale. But if you’re craving affordability, walkability, and vibrant social energy, it might be worth exploring other parts of the Valley.
